What is Tinnitus

Ringing in ears is called as Tinnitus. Tinnitus can also sound like Buzzing, Roaring, Clicking, Hissing or Humming sound. You may experience tinnitus at any place or time – whether you are chatting on the phone, in a meeting, or even while relaxing in quiet place. You hear a sound that seems to come from nowhere and that only you can hear. Tinnitus can interfere with your concentration and prevent you from hearing what you want to hear, no matter how mild or severe, or how often or rarely, it occurs.

Causes of Tinnitus

Tinnitus itself is not a disease, but a symptom of an underlying condition and there are several causes that can trigger tinnitus.

  • Tinnitus due to Hearing Loss
  • Tinnitus due to Aging
  • Tinnitus due to Noise Exposure
  • Tinnitus Due to Medications
  • other factors for Tinnitus

However, by finding the cause for the tinnitus, treatment plan for tinnitus is strategically planned based on the identified causes in each patient leading to successful reduction of effects of Tinnitus for many people who suffer for longtime. Few of such treatment plan includes:

  • Progressive Tinnitus Management (PTM)

Common Causes of Tinnitus

There are many possible causes of Tinnitus. Following are the common causes of Tinnitus

Tinnitus Due to Hearing Loss

About 80% of the patients with tinnitus have some degree of hearing loss. However, tinnitus does not cause hearing loss, they go hand-in-hand.

Hearing loss reduces the signals passing from ear to brain and the brain overcompensates for the loss by creating its own background noise, and patient hears that as Tinnitus.

Tinnitus Due to Aging

Aging causes tinnitus by affecting the hearing system in many ways. Few common mechanisms are:

  • Damaging the nerve endings in inner ear and reduces sound signals to brain.
  • Stiffening of bones in the middle ear, Otosclerosis), which reduces the transmission of sound to the inner ear.
  • Aging changes in the brain’s processing of sound signals, which may result in the perception of phantom noises or increased sensitivity to certain frequencies.
  • High blood pressure, cardiovascular diseases, thyroid problems or tumors.

Tinnitus Due to Noise Exposure

When you are exposed to loud noises, the tiny sensors in the inner ear called Hair cells will be damaged resulting in disruption of the sound signals to the brain. The brain may then create or amplify sounds that are not real. Tinnitus can affect one or both ears.

Tinnitus Due to Medications

Some medications like painkillers, antibiotics, chemotherapy drugs, diuretics, anti-malaria drugs, antidepressants, and others have the capability of damaging inner ear sensors (hair cells).

Depending on the dose and patient conditions, these hair cells can die or severely damaged, resulting in permanent hearing loss and Tinnitus due to reduced information to Brain.

Tinnitus Due to Other Factors

Other diseases also cause tinnitus, and few include:

  • Allergies,
  • High or low blood pressures
  • Tumors
  • Anemia
  • Muscle related issues
  • Temporomandibular joint issues
  • More.
